FOIA Request to Bethel University Regarding Chinese National Students on May 14, 2025.

As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in public institutions, NW Tennessee News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Bethel University. The request seeks detailed information concerning the university’s Chinese National students and associated policies.

Specifically, we have requested documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, including their department of study. If certain information is protected, we have asked for the total number of such students broken down by department. Additionally, we seek details on scholarships received by these students, including amounts and sources, particularly those affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Furthermore, we have requested any policies or procedures that describe how Bethel University monitors its students—especially Chinese Nationals—to safeguard the institution’s intellectual property and other confidential information.

This request is made in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing transparency through the use of Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws. Our aim is to provide comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs while holding public institutions accountable.

As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to these records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. We believe this information will help inform the American electorate about how educational institutions manage international student affairs and protect sensitive information.
