FOIA Request to The University of Tennessee Martin Regarding Chinese National Students on May 14, 2025.

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to The University of Tennessee Martin. This request seeks detailed information concerning Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.

Our inquiry specifically requests documents or lists that reveal the number and departmental distribution of current students who are Chinese Nationals. In cases where individual student names are protected, we have asked for a total count by department instead. Additionally, we seek information regarding scholarships awarded to these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. We are particularly interested in identifying any scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

Furthermore, we have requested access to any university policies or procedures related to monitoring students—specifically Chinese Nationals—to safeguard the institution’s Intellectual Property and other confidential information.

This request is made on behalf of NW Tennessee News and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. As members of the media dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency, we believe this information is vital for public knowledge. We have also requested a fee waiver given our role in disseminating important news to the public.
