Today, Congressman David Kustoff (R-TN) published an op-ed in the Washington Examiner titled “The ‘one big, beautiful bill’ will restore the American dream.” In this piece, he emphasizes the significance of historic tax cuts included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and calls on the Senate to pass it promptly.
Congressman Kustoff recalls President Donald Trump’s promise to revitalize the economy and create opportunities for families, farms, and small businesses. He notes that Republicans have worked with Trump to fulfill this promise through extending provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 using reconciliation. This legislative process allows for expedited policy enactment.
Kustoff highlights that TCJA was a significant reform to the federal tax code, reducing individual income rates, corporate taxes, estate planning rules, and taxes for small businesses. He asserts that these measures ignited economic growth nationwide.
However, many TCJA provisions are set to expire at year’s end unless Congress acts. Kustoff warns that this could lead to a nearly 26% tax hike for families in West Tennessee and financial challenges for family farms and small businesses.
Kustoff criticizes Democrats’ spending while praising efforts by the House Ways and Means Committee to prepare for this moment. The committee gathered input from various stakeholders who supported maintaining TCJA’s provisions.
He argues that revitalizing the economy requires supporting workers and businesses through favorable tax policies. The proposed bill aims to benefit both groups by solidifying deductions, expanding credits, and incorporating Trump’s priorities like no tax on tips or overtime.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is described as central to Trump’s “America First” agenda. It has passed in the House of Representatives with hopes of preventing increased financial burdens on families and businesses.
Kustoff concludes by urging Senate colleagues to pass this legislation swiftly to protect what he describes as “the American dream.”
