Reps. David Kustoff and Steve Cohen, along with Senators Marsha Blackburn and Tammy Duckworth, have introduced the Don’t Miss Your Flight Act in a bipartisan effort to enhance roadways surrounding airports. This legislation aims to utilize existing federal funds to incentivize surface transportation projects within a five-mile radius of airports, thereby improving access and reducing congestion.
Congressman Kustoff highlighted the significance of this initiative for Memphis International Airport, stating, “Memphis International Airport is the second busiest cargo airport in the world. It is imperative that shipments can get in and out of Memphis quickly and effectively.” He emphasized the act’s role in modernizing surface transportation around major airports.
Congressman Cohen pointed out the economic benefits of reducing congestion around airports, noting that “Improving access and reducing congestion to our nation’s airports through our next surface transportation reauthorization bill makes good economic sense.” He added that updates facilitated by this act would enhance air travel experiences across the country.
Senator Blackburn stressed the importance of addressing growing passenger demands at Tennessee’s airports: “Our nation’s airports are working overtime to meet growing passenger demand, and our airports in Tennessee are no exception.”
Senator Duckworth expressed her support by recalling common travel frustrations: “We’ve all been there—you’re rushing to the airport but then get stuck in traffic outside while worrying that your flight is going to take off without you.” She emphasized the need for improvements in surface transportation infrastructure.
The Don’t Miss Your Flight Act proposes creating a discretionary grant program using Highway Trust funds for projects that aim to reduce congestion and expand capacity near public airports. The initiative has received endorsements from various aviation associations including the Air Line Pilots Association and Airports Council International.
