Honors 82nd and 83rd Nursing Classes with Pinning Ceremony | Dyersburg State Community College
Dyersburg State Community College (DSCC) honored its 82nd and 83rd nursing classes with a ceremony for 27 graduates in the traditional nursing program and 12 graduates in the Paramedic to RN program on Dec. 8. A total of 2,177 nursing students have graduated from DSCC over the past 41 years.
Ms. Michelle Davis introduced the class officers for the traditional and Paramedic to RN programs. The traditional nursing program officers include Colin Peeler of Burlison, president; Jessica Kelly of Atoka, vice president; Autumn Shoemake of Covington, historian; and Erin Cardosi of Memphis, secretary. Class officers for the Paramedic to RN program included Stan Shepard of Nesbit, MS, president; Riley Herndon of Lakeland, vice president; Natalie Thomas of Olive Branch, MS, secretary; and Rachael Wallace of Southaven, MS, historian.
Mr. Travis Moore opened the ceremony with the invocation. Dr. Trenna Richardson, Interim Dean of Nursing, welcomed the graduates. DSCC President Dr. Scott Cook acknowledged the graduates and congratulated them on their accomplishments. The traditional class president, Mr. Colin Peeler, and the Paramedic-RN class president, Mr. Stan Shepherd, spoke to the graduating classes about their endeavors.
Ms. Amy Johnson, Interim Vice President for the College, presented the Friend of Nursing Award to Ms. Tanzy Henson of Ripley, Administrative Clerk II, at the Jimmy Naifeh Center.
The Scholastic Awards, presented by Ms. Kim Chrestman to students with the highest grade-point average (GPA) in each class, were awarded to traditional nursing class graduate Colin Peeler of Burlison, graduating with a 3.50 GPA and Kyle Barnes of Munford, graduating with a 3.48 GPA; and to Paramedic to RN nursing class graduate Kenneth Williamson of Arlington, graduating with a 3.44 GPA, and Lee Avery of Covington, graduating with a 3.41 GPA.
The Clinical Practice Awards, selected by members of the nursing faculty, were presented by Mr. W.C. Robinson to traditional nursing class graduate Kendra Kilpatrick of Atoka; and Paramedic to RN nursing class graduate Riley Herndon of Lakeland. This award is given to nursing graduates who demonstrate qualities such as the practice of nursing as a humanistic art and science, the recognition of each person as a unique individual, and acceptance of legal and ethical professional accountability.
Ms. Lisa Hayden presented the Peggy Pendergrast Faculty Award to the Paramedic to RN nursing class graduate Stan Shepard of Nesbit, MS. This special award, given in honor of the late Peggy Pendergrast, founding director of the DSCC nursing program, is presented to students demonstrating essential qualities for effective nursing practice.
The Friendship Awards, chosen by fellow class members, were presented by Ms. Brittany Gatlin to traditional nursing class graduate Kendra Kilpatrick of Atoka and Paramedic to RN nursing class graduate Travis Moore of Cordova.
Presentation of the traditional nursing students was given by Dr. Christy Hamilton, followed by presentation of the Paramedic to RN nursing students by Ms. Megan Shearon. Ms. Kim Chrestman, Ms. Tammy Hines, Ms. Lori Turner, and Ms. Brittany Gatlin led the lighting of the lamps and proceeded with the Nightingale Pledge with Ms. Jackie Watson. Ms. Erika Finley closed the pinning ceremony with the benediction.
