University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawk riffle sets season high in air rifle scoring in successful NCAA qualifier at Murray State

Many University of Tennessee at Martin rifle student-athletes performed extremely well during today's NCAA Qualifier, held on the campus of Murray State University.
           
The Skyhawks recorded a season-high air rifle score with 2,340 points today – besting the previous mark of 2,336 scored against Jacksonville State on Oct. 22. UT Martin also added 2,286 points in smallbore for an aggregate tally of 4,626. Murray State came away with 4,740 overall points (2,360 smallbore, 2,380 air rifle).
           
In air rifle, Nick Fares paced the Skyhawks for the eighth time this season with a score of 591 points, one shy of his career-high performance. Alayna Walther accumulated a strong score of 590 points while Joey Kovach notched 581 points. Jesse Chamberlain posted 578 points (one short of his career-high) as UT Martin's final countable score while Jeffrey Bourassa recorded a score of 562.
           
Walther guided the Skyhawks with 583 points in smallbore, equaling her career-high score while topping UT Martin for the seventh time this season in that category. Fares fired a 572 and was followed by Kovach's 568. Chamberlain continued his impressive day with 563 points – again coming just one point shy of tying a career-high – while Bourassa nabbed 543 points to wrap up the Skyhawk scoring.
           
Walther (season-high 1,163 points) led UT Martin in aggregate scoring for the eighth time this season and sixth time in the final seven matches of the 2022-23 campaign. Fares registered 1,163 points and was followed by Kovach (1,149), Chamberlain (1,141) and Bourassa (1,105). 
           
Competing on an individual basis, Victoria Petersen managed an aggregate score of 1,135 after performances of 574 in air rifle and 561 in smallbore.
           
The NCAA Selection Show – which unveils both the teams and individuals who will compete in the 2023 NCAA National Championship event held in Akron, Ohio on March 10-11 – is slated to take place this Monday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. CST on NCAA.com.
