The top-ranked King University women's wrestling team second at National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC) National Championships. The Tornado had 12 individuals earn All-American honors, led by national champion Ana Luciano and four runner-up finishes.

HOW IT HAPPENED - FRIDAY

  • The Tornado had five individuals reach the finals as Luciano took her first career championship.
  • At 136 pounds, top-ranked Ana Luciano earned a 4-0 victory over Paige Wehrmeister of Presbyterian College.
  • She defeated third-ranked Yele Aycock of North Central 8-7 to win her first national title.
  • At 109 pounds, second-ranked Sage Mortimer took a 12-2 technical fall over third-ranked Sydney Petzinger of North Central College in the semifinals.
  • In the final, she jumped ahead of top-ranked Emily Shilson of McKendree University, but ended up fall to take second.
  • Fourth-ranked Samara Chavez reached the final with a 12-2 technical fall over top-ranked Victoria Seal of Simon Fraser University.
  • In the final she scored first against third-ranked Jaslynn Gallegos of North Central, but ended up dropping the match to take second.
  • Top-ranked Ashlynn Ortega earned a 10-0 technical fall win over North Central's fourth-ranked London Houston.
  • Ortega then fell third-ranked Katie Lange of Augsburg University 8-6 to finish runner-up.
  • Second-ranked Chey Bowman took a 13-2 technical fall over third-ranked Emily Cue of Simon Fraser.
  • Bowman then fell to top-ranked Yelena Makoyed of North Central in the final, taking a runner-up finish.

Placements

  • King had five individuals fall in the semifinals, No. 1 Jessica Corredor at 101 pounds, No. 4 Diana Holmes at 109 pounds, No. 3 Vayle-Rae Baker at 123 pounds, No. 3 Montana DeLawder at 130 pounds and No. 4 Tiffani Baublitz at 155 pounds.
  • Holmes bounced back to defeat seventh-ranked Kendra Ryan of North Central 8-6 to reach the third-place match where she took a 19-12 decision from Petzinger to take third.
  • Baublitz reached the third-place bout with a 12-1 technical fall over Northern Michigan University's sixth-ranked Lydia Krauss. She then pinned fifth-ranked Malea Palahniuk of North Central in 1:23 to finish third.
  • Garcia reached the third-place match with an 8-6 win over second-ranked Payton Stroud of McKendree, but fell to Seal.
  • DeLawder pinned fifth-ranked Hailey Chapman of Colorado Mesa University in 5:03 to reach the third-place match where she fell to seventh-ranked Marquesis Haintz of Simon Fraser.
  • Baker dropped two matches and defeated fourth-ranked Sophia Macaluso of East Stroudsburg University 11-11 on criteria to take fifth.
  • Torres pinned North Central's Salome Walker in 5:52 to take seventh.
  • Corredor dropped three matches on the day, but finished sixth.
HOW IT HAPPENED - FRIDAY

  • No. 1 Jessica Corredor defeated Skylynn Thomlinson of Elmira College in the first round on a 10-0 technical fall at 101 pounds.
  • In the quarterfinals, Corredor pinned eighth-ranked Aaliyah Payne-Parris of Sacred Heart University in 4:43.
  • Also at 101 pounds, seventh-ranked Avery Kibelbek pinned Northern Michigan University's Trinity Valentin in 3:21 to reach the quarterfinals where she fell second-ranked Lizette Rodriguez of McKendree University. She then fell in the consolation bracket to end her tournament.
  • At 109 pounds, second-ranked Sage Mortimer pinned Izabella Frezzo of New Jersey City University in 51 seconds before taking a 10-0 technical fall over eighth-ranked Maddi McKenzie of Simon Fraser University in the quarterfinals.
  • Fourth-ranked Dianna Holmes opened with a 12-2 technical fall over McKendree University's Pauline Granados to reach the quarterfinals she took a 10-0 technical fall victory over fifth-ranked Kaelani Schufeldt of Lock Haven University.
  • At 116 pounds, fourth-ranked Samara Chavez defeated fifth-ranked teammate Danielle Garcia squared off in the quarterfinals.
  • Chavez started with a 10-0 technical fall over Adrian College's Angela LoRusso while Garcia took an 11-0 technical fall over Tateum Park of Augsburg University to start the tournament.
  • Garcia then won her consolation match, pinning Allison Meyer of William Jewell College in 1:22 to clinch and All-American finish.
  • Third-ranked Vayle-Rae Baker started her weekend with a 13-5 decision over McKendree's Alisha Narvaez before pinning sixth-ranked Mia Macaluso of East Stroudsburg University in 1:25 in the 123-pound quarterfinals.
  • Also at 123 pounds, seventh-ranked Melanie Mendoza took an 11-2 decision over Linfield University's Emily Sullinger to reach the quarterfinals where she fell to second-ranked Amani Jones of North Central College 7-2. She then fell in the consolation bracket to end her tournament.
  • Third-ranked Montana DeLawder started the 130-pound bracket with a 13-2 technical fall over Augsburg's Autumn Flanigan to reach the quarterfinals where she defeated sixth-ranked Lily Sherer of Lock Haven 6-4.
  • Top-ranked Ana Luciano started with a pin of Simon Fraser's Jade Trolland in 51 seconds. She then took an 11-5 decision over eighth-ranked Diana Dzasezeva of Northern Michigan in the quarterfinals.
  • Also at 136 pounds, Viktorya Torres started with a 15-5 technical fall over North Central's Salome Walker before falling to fifth-ranked Paige Wehrmeister of Presbyterian College in the quarterfinals.
  • In the consolation bracket, Torres pinned seventh-ranked Lana Perez of Gannon University in 3:58 to clinch All-American honors.
  • No. 1 Ashlynn Ortega opened with a pair of 10-0 technical falls, defeating Poorna Babu of Texas Woman's University at 143 pounds and Northern Michigan's Marisa Roth in the quarterfinals.
  • At 155 pounds, fourth-ranked Tiffani Baublitz earned a 10-4 decision over Skylah Chakouian of Elmira before defeating fifth-ranked Malea Palahniuk of North Central College 4-1 in the quarterfinals.
  • Second-ranked Chey Bowman started a 170 pounds with a 4-2 decision over Kamila Montenegro of Chadron State University before earning a 10-0 technical fall over seventh-ranked Jewl Gonzalez of Gannon in the quarterfinals.
  • At 191 pounds, sixth-ranked Nia Crosdale dropped her first bout, but came back with a 10-0 technical fall win over Victoria Craft of Schreiner University in her first consolation bout.
  • However, she fell to eighth-ranked Jaklyn Smith of Sacred Heart to end her tournament.

FOR THE FOES

  • North Central College won the championship while the Tornado finished runner-up.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • All 12 Tornado wrestlers that reached the second day earned All-American honors.
